Dogs fed raw meat contract antibiotic resistant bacteria
A team from the University of Bristol led two studies revealing the effect of raw meats on dogs. According to this new research, feeding dogs with raw meat would promote the proliferation of bacteria resistant to antibiotics. It would also make them more likely to evacuate Escherichia coli(E.coli) resistant to antibiotics in their defecationwhich can be dangerous for humans.
A study published in the Log of Antimicrobial chemotherapy and another published in the journal One Health detected a relationship between raw meat consumption and excretion of E. coli resistant. The first research involved adult dogs, while the other involved 16-week-old puppies. Data from different dogs have shown that shedding of resistant E. coli did not depend on age or duration of raw meat diet.
There would be other risk factors at the origin of these resistant bacteria
Shedding of resistant bacteria could depend on the dog’s living environment. Feeding raw meat has been a high risk factor for dogs living in the countryside. For those living in cities, the risk factors were more difficult to identify. The diversity of lifestyles and exposures are probably there for something.
The researchers then examined the samples for the presence of. coli resistant to antibiotics. They also analyzed the risk factors. Their goal was to determine if the environments reported by homeowners during the survey were related to the presence of E. resistant coli.
“Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are everywhere, but some antibiotics are considered critically important for use in humans. We have shown that dogs fed raw meat are more likely to carry bacteria resistant to these important drugs. This does not mean that the animal, or its owner, will become ill. »
