Universal chargers: India will opt for two models instead of one
Last June, the members of the European Union reached an agreement concerning chargers for telephones and electronic devices. This requires manufacturers operating in the union to adopt a USB-C type charger from 2024. A historic decision that has had a snowball effect since that day around the world.
After the United States and Brazil, it is India’s turn to take an interest in the issue of the universal charging port. However, Bharat authorities have decided to take a less restrictive approach than their European counterparts. Instead of the single USB-C type charger, they want to leave the door open for a second universal charger.
India follows EU lead, but wants to do things differently
The announcement relating to the desire of the Indian authorities to adopt in turn a regulation relating to universal chargers was made by the government in place. He indicated that he wanted to set up expert groups very soon to work on the issue.
They will have the task of working to determine to what extent it will be possible to adopt the same chargers for smartphones and electronic devices marketed in the country. Unlike the European Union, India favors dialogue with stakeholders before its government takes a final decision based on everyone’s proposals. In addition to this, the country’s authorities have made it clear that they are not looking to force all smartphone and electronic device manufacturers to switch to USB-C type charger.
Instead, the government wants to switch to two types of chargers, including one of the USB-C type. A choice that could do the business of Apple’s Lightning port even if it must be admitted that the Apple brand is already working to adopt USB-C type chargers on all its devices.
A measure considered beneficial for the planet and for consumers
Above all, it should not be thought that India wants to do like its counterparts just for the sake of it. Bharat, which is one of the largest markets for selling smartphones in the world, is aware of the burden that its electronic waste represents for the planet. The authorities therefore want to contribute in turn to reducing this pollution.
To this effect, a senior official from India’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs said that the request is made primarily for the purpose of preventing e-waste in India. Here is an excerpt from his statement: “If companies can comply in Europe and the United States, why can’t they comply in India? Portable electronic devices like smartphones and tablets should have a common charger.”
However, this is not the only reason behind this desire to standardize charging standards in the country. The authorities are also looking to reduce the expenses of consumers who are today obliged to have a different charger for each device.
Everything now seems to indicate that the planet is resolutely ready to open the chapter of universal chargers with the USB-C standard as a bridgehead.
