It’s confirmed, quinoa seeds help fight type 2 diabetes!

Today, it is increasingly possible to heal oneself through food. This is precisely what prompted scientists from theAugust Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) to conduct research on quinoa seeds. Surprisingly, many theories and beliefs have been raised about this pseudocereal, but none of them have been concretely verified.

The seed actually contains a multitude of substances such as polyphenols (a type of micronutrient very present in quinoa), capable of keeping blood sugar levels low. It is also rich in minerals like calcium, iron and magnesium without forgetting vitamin B, E and C.

Diana Daz Rizzolo, a researcher at the August Pi i Sunyer Institute for Biomedical Research (IDIBAPS), was the main actor in the research. The results of the study appear in the journal Nutrients.

Quinoa seeds are able to reduce blood sugar spikes

To confirm the effectiveness of quinoa seeds, subjects in their 60s were tested, since old age is an aggravating factor disease. The participants’ blood sugar content was measured when they ate foods rich in complex carbohydrates, such as cereals, legumes, tubers and pasta.

Then, these meals were replaced with quinoa and foods from said pseudocereal. The results reveal that the pseudocereals make it possible to significantly reduce blood sugar levels. In addition, quinoa also helps to regulate blood lipid concentrations. This is a feature that could help control high cholesterol and other factors associated with heart risk.

At the beginning of their research, the scientists thought to rely on the results of the studies carried out before. But they realized that the previous research was only tests carried out on substances isolated from quinoa regardless of the entire composition of the food. The recent discovery therefore serves as evidence to confirm the effectiveness of quinoa seeds and more specifically of polyphenol in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
